Fillings Specialist

Practicing good oral hygiene can drastically reduce the chances that you’ll get cavities. Cavities are decayed areas of a tooth, and in many cases, the area causes sensitivity when you eat or drink something hot or cold. Cavities can happen to any tooth, not just the teeth in the back of your mouth where you mostly chew. Fortunately, Crowley Dentistry provides tooth-colored fillings at his practice in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Benjamin J. Crowley also provides gold or amalgam fillings, which make the repair virtually undetectable.

Fillings Q & A

by Benjamin J. Crowley, DDS

What is the purpose of a filling?

The main reason most people need fillings is to create a barrier to prevent bacteria from entering the decayed area of a tooth. In order to treat a cavity, Dr. Crowley will remove the decayed part of the tooth and then “fill” the area in the tooth where the decayed material was. Fillings can also be used to repair a cracked or broken tooth and teeth that have been worn down from nail biting or teeth grinding. If your tooth has significant decay, you may not be a candidate for a filling, and instead, a crown may be the dentist’s recommendation. Dr. Crowley will carefully assess each situation to advise on the best treatment option for each patient.

What if the decayed part of my tooth is visible when I smile?

Dr. Crowley can fill your cavity with a tooth-colored inlay (filling) that matches your natural teeth. Many patients prefer tooth-colored fillings so that nothing is visible when they smile, laugh, or open their mouth. The cost of using a porcelain filling is comparable to that of using a gold inlay. For back teeth where the cavity and filling aren’t readily noticeable, a silver inlay is inexpensive. Silver inlays are very durable, too.

What is the procedure for filling a cavity?

Dr. Crowley will first make sure the decayed area of your tooth is completely clean. An x-ray will determine the exact location and the extent to which the decay has affected your tooth and any surrounding teeth. The precise treatment will depend on Dr. Crowley’s examination and assessment of the damaged tooth. If you think you may need to have a filling, call or schedule your appointment online with Dr. Crowley. Dr. Crowley and his skilled staff will address any questions or concerns you may have regarding treatment. The practice is currently welcoming new patients and accepts most major forms of insurance.
